Their design process is founded on collaboration among Binth designers, Suzanna Bierwirth, Peter Dunham and Linnea Gitsand, and the other creative people with whom they work. They make it a priority to work with family-owned businesses run by traditional craftsmen that share their attention to detail and their high quality standards.
They also strongly believe it is essential to be environmentally conscious. That drop-dead colour mentioned earlier? They mix it by hand, using only water-based inks. Their paper stock, with its luxurious feel and palette of soft, contemporary hues is, you guessed it, recycled.
As a group, Binth shares an interest in the dynamic relationship between art and design and the reinvention of classic genres for the modern lifestyle.
Screen printing and creating that unique Binth colour, as told in their own words:
Each individual colour took hours upon hours of time to get at that perfect Binth colour. We mix the inks and then test them in draw-downs and check them in daylight. And fluorescent. And the weird light in the office in the back room. Re-mix. Re-draw. Argue. One of us then storms out of the room in defiance that it is too dark or too light. Come back in. Apologize. Re-mix. Re-draw. Re-fight. Re-make-up. Finally, hours later and after the final hit of this or that ink we suddenly, happily agree -- it is now a Binth colour.
This passion for colour was why we chose screen-printing as our medium for creating our imagery. Screen-printing allowed us the painterly experience of laying down saturated, vibrant color that was both a visual as well as tactile experience. Refining the process with our printer we were able to create consistent, high-quality editions for our card lines, prints, our book and notepads. Our hand-mixed colors are created using water-based inks and printed on paper carefully selected for its recycled content as well as its beauty.
