Founded by Trine Andersen, ferm LIVING is a Danish company that aims at designing and manufacturing graphic lifestyle products. In Danish, “ferm” means “clever” and is used particularly to describe fine handiwork.

Back in 2005, Trine decided, mostly for fun, to visit a clairvoyant. Trine was a little astonished when the clairvoyant saw a little bird sitting confused on a branch, not knowing which way to fly. This sight was essential for Trine’s decision to follow her dream of starting her own business. Passion for graphic design, interior decoration and fashion is the nerve behind ferm LIVING and the little bird that did not know where to fly next found its way and now sits on top of the company logo.

ferm LIVING’s products are intended for people who are interested in design and who are not afraid of being bold when they decorate. The inspiration for ferm LIVING’s designs comes from many different things: fashion, nature, architecture, flee markets, travelling the world, even old needlework books. Trine has an eye for taking things like retro designs and elements from nature and reinterpreting them in a way that makes them clean and modern.

If you’ve never hung wallpaper before, we highly recommend hiring a professional to do the work. In the end, it will most likely save you money, help you avoid a lot of frustration, and ensure your satisfaction with the result.

WALLPAPER INSTRUCTIONS

Before you begin…

Check the package inserts to make sure that the batch numbers match. Please note that patterned wallpaper requires some extra length in order to make the pattern match continuously. When you measure, remember to account for the repeat.

We recommend that you remove old wallpaper, but if it is even and the new paper adheres well to it, you can apply the new wallpaper over it. Be sure to smooth the old joints with sandpaper to make them invisible under the new wallpaper.

You may need the following items: razor knife (with spare blades), ladder or step stool, seam roller, screwdriver, straightedge, sandpaper, marking pencil, wallpaper brush, plastic bucket, sponge and/or cloth, scissors, paint roller or paste brush, string or plumb line, wallpaper spatula.

Step 1
Draw a vertical line to place the first section correctly. You can use an ordinary pair of
scissors on a string to obtain a straight line. Measure the length of the wall and cut
the paper into sections that have an extra 4 inches at the top and bottom.

Step 2
Place the sections face down on a table and line the tops of the paper up with the
edge of the table. Make sure that the sections fully cover the table – if paste gets
on the table, it can stick to the front of the next sections.

Step 3
Apply paste to 2-3 sections at a time using your paste brush or a paint roller. Fold
them in half so that the pasted surfaces are touching and let them absorb the
paste for about 7 minutes. Be sure to use enough paste.

Step 4
Put up the first section along the line without unfolding the lower fold. Smooth with
a dry wallpaper brush or wallpaper spatula, and then unfold the rest of the section.
Smooth each section diagonally from the top down and from the center outward,
forcing out air bubbles. Roll over seams with the seam roller to ensure that they lie
flat and fit together snugly.

Step 5
Mark the edge of excess paper with a ruler or a spatula. Carefully lift it and cut it off.
Or, use a wallpaper spatula to make a crease and then trim excess paper with a
sharp razor knife. Check all the edges and make sure that they are firmly applied to
the wall. It is not too late to add more paste along the edges and smooth the edges
back out.

Step 6
When a couple of lengths have been hung, any excess paste on the front of the
wallpaper can be removed with a moist sponge or cloth.

When the hanging is done the walls should be allowed to dry as quickly as possible. Ventilate the room thoroughly.

Enjoy!
